Why I Believe the Bible

#1.  I know the Author!  Christianity is not a religion; it is a loving personal relationship with the Creator of the universe.  Our awesome and gracious Creator has given us the Bible to facilitate this relationship.  Through it, He teaches us all about Himself, as well as how we are to relate to Him.  If the Bible wasn’t true and this relationship wasn’t a reality, then no Christian—after studying the Bible in depth—would remain a Christian.  It would disprove itself.  (In the “God Obvious” section of this website, you can read about more than fifty years of my relationship with God.)

If you love me, you will obey what I command.  And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another counselor to be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him. John 14:15-21

#2.  The Bible was supernaturally given to us by God!  He used human beings to write it—who had no idea that they were doing so—sovereignly controlling its’ every word, as well as it compilation.  The sixty-six books (sections) of the Bible were written by more than forty different people, on three different continents (Europe, Asia and Africa), in three different languages (Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic), over a period of 1,600 years, and all sixty-six books are completely cohesive and totally agree.

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness . . .  2 Timothy 3:16

#3.  God uses the Bible ceaselessly in His children’s lives and He’s not going to let us mess it up!  God created, sustains and controls the entire universe—from atoms to galaxies—greatly for the benefit of His children (those of us who have or will accept Him as Lord and Savior).

And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years .  .  .  Genesis 1:14

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. Psalm 19:1-4

God provided mankind with the Bible for the benefit of His children.

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness . . .  2 Timothy 3:16

God uses the Bible ceaselessly to guide, shape and bless His children.

For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

God will use our knowledge of the Bible—if we are His children, we know what it says, and are trying to live accordingly—to communicate with us on a regular basis.  He will remind us of a verse of scripture – which conveys what He wants to tell us in a particular situation.  Occasionally, He will exercise physical control over a situation in order to do the same thing: He will sovereignly move us to read a specific verse or section at a particular time.  (To see an example of this, go to the ‘God Obvious’ section of this website and read the entry: “A lesson in spiritual warfare,” dated 02/17/1993.)

God will not let His children mess up the Bible—which has been translated into more than twelve-hundred different languages and dialects—so that it is no longer correct or useful to Him.

The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever.  Isaiah 40:8

#4. The accuracy of our modern day Bible translations is verified by an enormous number of ancient manuscripts.

The English language translations which are verifiable—and can be found in Christian bookstores today—are the  Amplified Bible, English Standard Version, King James Version, Holman Christian Standard Bible, New American Standard Bible, New International Version, New Living Translation, New King James Version, New Revised Standard Version, The Message Bible.

The ‘Old Testament’ manuscripts (which foretold that Jesus would come into the world to die for our sins) have been preserved—by the Israelites—more accurately than any writings throughout history.  The ‘New Testament’ (which reports that Jesus did come into the world to die for our sins) is supported by more than 24,000 ancient manuscripts; the earliest ones found, being written within one-hundred years of Jesus’ earthly visit.  There are more than 5,300 Greek, more than 10,000 Latin Vulgate, and more than 9,300 other manuscripts which have been found.

[F.Y.I. There are cults who have altered translations of the Bible.  Do not trust any person or organization which claims that their translation—which differs from all the rest—is the only one which is correct.]

#5. The Bible accurately describes the world around me!  The Bible says God created the universe.  (Logic and wisdom agree.)  It says He did it in six days, approximately 6,000 years ago.  (Physical science, physics, astronomy, geology, archaeology, and nature agree.)  It says humans are the ultimate part of His physical creation and He gave us dominion over the earth.  (Intellect, knowledge, language, education, technology, creativity, construction and zoos agree.)  It says the reason He created us was to love us.  (The establishment of the family, the knowledge of morality, and the beauty of creation agree.)  It says even though the original two people were created good, they rebelled against God, thus, the human race became evil.  (History and current events agree.)  It says that at one point, the human race became so evil that God destroyed it with a world‑wide flood.  (Geology and paleontology agree.)  It says this judgment occurred around 4,000 years ago and killed all except for eight people.  (The earth’s population and growth rate agree.)  It says that today, the majority of the human race is still in rebellion against Him.  (The wide spread acceptance of the Theory of Evolution agrees.)  It says we have all descended from the original two people, have all been born with a rebellious nature, and have all sinned against God.  (Our memory, thoughts, speech, and actions agree.)  It says because of our sin, we have been separated from God.  (Experience agrees.)  It says God still loves us and wants to forgive us. (Restrained judgment agrees.)  It says that to be able to forgive us, He stepped into our world and suffered physical death–taking upon Himself the justly required punishment for our sins.  (History agrees.)

#6. The Bible accurately foretells the future, and it does it a lot!   More than twenty-five percent of the Bible was prophetic when written.

According to “The Encyclopedia of Biblical Prophecy” by J. Barton Payne, there are 1,239 prophecies in the Old Testament and 578 prophecies in the New Testament for a total of 1,817. These prophecies are contained in 8,352 of the Bible’s verses. Since there are 31,124 verses in the Bible, the 8,352 verses that contain prophecy constitute 26.8 percent of the Bible’s volume.

Much of this prophesy has already been fulfilled and much of it is still to come.  For example, look at what it says will be occurring just before Jesus returns—first in the rapture and then seven years later in His second coming.

(The following ‘current event’ information was compiled and written in 1999, and comes from —“The Second Most Incredible Book . . .”—available to download free on this website.)

 Scripture: Matthew 24:3‑9,14

“. . . what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”   Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you.  For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many.

There were reportedly hundreds of people in the last half of the 20th century claiming to be the Christ (the promised one who has come to “save the elect”)–Jim Jones, Charles Manson, and multitudes of others around the world.

You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed.

In the first 80 years of the 20th century, there were more wars fought than in any other 200 consecutive years of history.  It was also the only time that the whole world was at war and it happened twice during this period.

Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.  Nation will rise against nation,

(The word “nation” in this passage is translated from the Greek word “ethnos,” which is related to the word “ethnic.”  “Nation shall rise against nation” is referring to conflicts which will be fought between various races and cultures.)  According to a 1993 article in the New Your Times magazine, there were 48 ethnic battles which were presently being fought or had recently been fought around the world.  Except for the poles and North and South America, they basically covered the globe.  A statement from this article by U.S. Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan said that the defining form of conflict in the era ahead would be “ethnic.”

and kingdom against kingdom.   There will be famines

According the World Health Organization (an agency of the United Nations), as of the last decade of the 20th century, we have entered into what is officially known as the “Age of Famine.”  According to this organization, one-third of the world’s population is starving–with 4 million resulting deaths per year–and another one-third is underfed.

and earthquakes in various places.  All these are the beginning of birth pains.

According to data available from the National Earthquake Information Center, major earthquakes were occurring throughout the 20th century in a cyclical time pattern.  When graphing the quantity of major earthquakes–those with a magnitude of 7.0 or greater–which occurred each year–1900 through 1996–roughly a 30-year cyclical pattern emerges.  The quantity of major earthquakes had increased centering around the years 1911, 1943, 1973 and was increasing at the end of the century, and decreased between each of these approximately 30 year highs.  When viewing the mean line of these earthquakes on a chart, this increasing and decreasing pattern closely resembles the highs and lows of the birth pains a woman experiences shortly before giving birth.

Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death and you will be hated by all nations because of me. . .

There have been more Christians killed because of their testimony and faith in God in the last 100 years than in the preceding 1,900 years combined.

And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations,

With the advent of the radio, television, short wave radio, communications satellites, the internet and other 20th century communication and travel technologies, God’s offer of salvation is being broadcast around the globe.

and then the end will come.”

Jesus also included “pestilences” as one of these signs.  This was recorded by Luke, but not by Matthew. (See Luke 21:10.)

In 1999, the Unaids/World Health Organization (an agency of the United Nations) estimated that 33.6 million people currently had AIDS, 16.3 million people had already died from it, and 5.6 million new cases would be contracted in 1999. They were also expecting 2.6 million deaths in 1999. There are also other infectious diseases occurring more often around the world, many incurable and some deadly: tuberculosis, Ebola, many other ravaging sexually transmitted diseases in addition to AIDS, and an ever increasing problem with antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

#7. The Bible—which makes some pretty amazing claims—is far more logical and easy to believe than any opposing claims!  For instance, the Bible says that God created the universe and everything in it—by His will—and that He has sovereign control over it.  (Being surprised by a miracle of God is as illogical as being surprised by a house-builder who repairs a house.)

For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them . . . Exodus 20:11

Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the LORD drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided, and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left. Exodus 14:21-22

Behold, I will create new heavens and a new earth. Isaiah 65:17

The Theory of Evolution, on the other hand—which is in complete opposition to the Bible

For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 2 Timothy 4:3-4

and is an intentional attack against it—

An atheist explains the Theory of Evolution: “It becomes clear now that the whole justification of Jesus’ life and death is predicated on the existence of Adam and the forbidden fruit he and Eve ate. Without the original sin, who needs to be redeemed? Without Adam’s fall into a life of constant sin terminated by death, what purpose is there to Christianity? None. . . . Christianity has fought, still fights, and will fight science to the desperate end over evolution, because evolution destroys utterly and finally the very reason Jesus’ earthly life was supposedly made necessary. Destroy Adam and Eve and the original sin, and in the rubble you will find the sorry remains of the son of god. Take away the meaning of his death. If Jesus was not the redeemer who died for our sins, and this is what evolution means, then Christianity is nothing!” G. Richard Bozarth, American Atheist Magazine, Feb., 1978.

is utter stupidity and easily disproved.  ‘Evolution’ says that God does not exist, and that human beings—as well as every other living thing on earth—are accidents.  (Question: Could the entire human race—combining all of our knowledge, technology, ability and resources—create a computer robot with all of the abilities of a human being?  Of course not!  Yet, evolutionists say that humans ultimately exist because a star blew up and mud got warm.)

The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”   Psalm 14:1

(For more information on the Theory of Evolution, see the poem – “True Brilliance, Evolution Exposed,” in the “Poetry with an Attitude” section of this website – or download the free book.)

#8.  The Bible presents God and a solution to mankind’s problem, where all religions fail!  We humans are created sentient – conscious, self-aware, intellectual and emotional beings.  We are born with a sense of justice; the belief that there is ‘right’ and ‘wrong,’ and that ‘wrong’ should be punished.  We have a concept of mercy—the desire that ‘wrongs’ could be forgiven—especially those done by us.  We have a concept of grace—the desire that one could receive favor without having to earn it—especially when we are children.  We also desire unconditional love—that we could be freely accepted, affirmed, cared for and treated with compassion, just because we exist.  The One who created mankind must, therefore, possess these same qualities.  Would a Creator build these characteristics into His creation if He did not possess or express them Himself?

The God of the Bible is described in exactly this way.  It says that He is a person (actually three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit) with intellect, will and emotions.  It says that He is ‘just’ and must punish all sin.  It says that He loves us, that He is ‘gracious’ and ‘merciful,’ and that He did the most amazing thing in order to be able to forgive our sins.  God-the Son stepped into His creation, lived a sinless life, then suffered and died in our place, taking the justly required punishment for our sins.  After He died, God-the Father raised the Son back to life – an easy feat for the sovereign Creator of the universe.  (Jesus’ death on the cross is analogous to a father who pays a traffic fine for his child.  Justice is served, the father suffers and the child is spared the consequences.)  God did this (after giving us free-will, so loving Him could be a choice) so He could forgive us, spiritually wash us clean, then love and care for us forever in Heaven.

No other religion has a god like this.  Their teachings not only clash with the Bible and the reality just discussed—that mankind is sentient and desires justice, mercy, grace and love and, therefore,  his Creator must be the same way—some of them are just bizarre.  Every religion—as opposed to Christianity—fits into one or more of the following categories.

‘Atheism’ teaches that God does not exist – there is no god above us.  ‘Monism’ teaches that all things are one and the same—there is no essential difference between God, rocks, germs, cows, maggots or people—which is simply another way of saying – there is no god above us.  ‘Pantheism’ teaches that God is at one with and pervasive in all created matter— rocks, germs, cows, maggots, people—which is yet another way of saying – there is no god above us.  Taoism teaches that God is an impersonal force (“ki,” “chi,” “prana” or simply “the force”) which is in and is a part of all things—rocks, germs, cows, maggots, people—which is yet another way of saying – there is no god above us.

When people get this deceived by Satan’s lies, they end up doing things like worshipping cows—some Hindu holy men drinking their urine and spreading the ashes from dung fires in their hair as part of their worship—and letting multitudes of people starve to death, rather than eating the cows (which God gave to us for food).

He (Satan) was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. John 8:44

Self-deifying religions (Mormonism, Hinduism, etc.) teach that people are gods now, or can become gods sometime in the future, which is another way of saying – there is no god above us.  (Mormonism teaches that Jesus was a man who became a god, and we—like Jesus—can become the god of our own planet).  A few religions—Hinduism / New Age—being extremely loose in their doctrine, incorporate more than one of these teachings into their systems.  The remainder of the world’s religions teach that, while a transcendent personal god (or gods) does exist, we do not need his grace, mercy or sacrifice to get to Heaven.  We can get to Heaven by self-effort, by doing enough, serving enough or being good enough.  We do not need to humble ourselves before God—asking for forgiveness and accepting His authority over us.  In other words – we need no god above us.

The problem again, is sin and justice.  We know that we have sinned, and that no amount of ‘good’ which we can do, can turn back the clock and erase the ‘bad’ that we have done.

Running a red light cannot be erased by stopping at the next fifty.  Stealing an item from a store cannot be erased by paying for the next fifty.

And really, how much bad have we done?  Haven’t we all committed a countless multitude of sins?  We need somebody to take our sin debt away, and only the Bible offers a God like this.

#9. The final reason that I believe the Bible is because of spiritual warfare.  When God created humans and all the other life forms on earth, He also created angels.  Angels, like humans, are sentient beings—conscious, self-aware, intellectual, and emotional—but do not have physical bodies.  Also, like humans, angels were given ‘free-will.’  They had the freedom to accept or reject God.  As a result, one-third of them rebelled against Him.  (The Bible refers to these rebellious angels as “demons.”)  Lucifer—the highest ranking angel whom God created—started this rebellion and is still leading it.  (Lucifer is now called “Satan” or “the devil.”)  The major thrust of this demonic rebellion is a fight against the expansion of God’s kingdom.  They do not want people accepting God’s forgiveness and lordship and, thus, entering into His eternal family.  Salvation represents a defection from and a defeat to Satan’s kingdom.

And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. The god of this age (Satan) has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 2 Corinthians 4:3-4

Without going into any detail here about my personal experiences in this war (which you can read all about in the “God Obvious” section on this website), let me just say that God invited me, a long time ago, to join the battle.

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Ephesians 6:12

He asked me if I wanted to be used by Him to lead people to salvation.  Because I had friends and family members who were on their way to Hell (and still do), I said, “Yes!”  The battle has raged ever since.  God has used the Bible to teach me all about this spiritual warfare and to equip me for the battle.  This has not only enabled me to stand and fight—continuously attacking the gates of Hades—it has proven to me in yet another way, that the Bible is absolutely true and absolutely reliable.

Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Ephesians 6:13

And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. Matthew 16:18
